Selected Events Connected with Project Civil City
In addition to the VPSN's Community Debates and Workshops, a number of other organizations have held specific events on, or relating to Project Civil City.
Think City – Civil City Dialogue – Monday May 14 – “Think City is inviting you to gather over drinks and tapas to engage in a dialogue on May 14 about what makes for a civil city. Just how does Mayor Sullivan's Project Civil City compare to other attempts to create high-quality, ecodense cities where residents have greater civic responsibilities?
To launch the evening's discussion, Think City is pleased to host the Chair of the City of Montreal's Democracy Task Force Dimitri Roussopoulos, one of the creators of the Montreal Charter of Rights and Responsibilities. Mr. Roussopoulos will speak on initiatives underway in Montreal and other cities that attempt to foster the principle of responsible citizenship. Takes place 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm, at Century House, 432 Richards Street.”
Civil City Slam - Speak Out! Public Forum - Tuesday, May 22 – “Mayor Sam Sullivan wants to tackle crime, public disorder and social issues via his Project Civil City initiative. But there’s a problem. It targets our most vulnerable residents.
Civil City Slam is a forum chaired by Libby Davies, MP for Vancouver East, where the people most targeted by Project Civil City can speak out to their elected representatives at all levels of government - about the impact of this project on themselves and their communities. Libby and other progressive electeds are monitoring the progress of the impacts of Project Civil City. There will be an open mike after the speakers.
Speakers for the event: David Eby, (Pivot Legal Society); Cynthia Low, (Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre); Micheal Vonn, (Policy Director, BC Civil Liberties Association); Andy Yan, (Carnegie Community Action Project); Sara Kendall, Youth Worker; Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU). Takes place 7:00pm – 9:00pm; First United Church, 320 East Hastings (at Gore).”
The Anti-Poverty Committee - Has organized a number of housing squats and parks-events and other initiatives (movie nights, camp-outs).
